Saltwater aquarium filtration is more complex than freshwater filtration and has a wider variety of equipment options. The type of filter system that you choose for your saltwater aquarium will be determined by the type of inhabitants that you plan to keep. If you intend to keep hard corals like SPS or LPS corals then keeping nitrate and phosphate levels in check will be critical to the health of your reef aquarium. Soft corals are more forgiving than hard corals.
